PUSDI Fair by CIMSA UNPAD

Every medical student has important roles in education, research, and services. These three roles needed to be synergized one to another so that the practice of medical teaching can result a great benefit for medical students. For this purpose, a place where medical students can create an integrated concept for these three values is needed. Therefore, SCORE CIMSA University of Padjajaran, collaborating with Faculty of Medicine, University of Padjajaran, held PUSDI Fair, which stands for Pusat Studi Fair (study center fair).

PUSDI Fair took place in Faculty of Medicine, University of Padjajaran (UNPAD), Jatinangor, in September 6th 2017. PUSDI Fair aims to introduce pre-clinical students for general medicine about the urgency of the existence of Pusat Studi in Faculty of Medicine, UNPAD. PUSDI itself has a significant role in altering everything that relates to the teaching process, and also in organizing research process which every medical student will undergo for their final thesis. Therefore, it is important that students understand PUSDI better.

The event PUSDI Fair began with an assessment of medical students’ understanding about the existence of PUSDI. Based on the assessment, we got a result that 66% of the students didn’t know about PUSDI, and 61 out of 62 students agreed to join our project. This meant that the existence of PUSDI hadn’t yet very well acknowledged by the students and that they had a big interest for knowing more about PUSDI.

Considering the assessment result, we decided to make some methods to introduce PUSDI. Those methods were:

  1. A talkshow with a resource person from PUSDI
  2. An essay competition with fixed themes, such as:
    1. Autophagy as a hypertrophy process of athletes’ heart
    2. The effect of Pala seeds in skeletal muscle structure formation and metabolism
    3. The effect of sports to the alteration of brain’s serotonin and dopamine expression
  3. An Introduction to the lecturers’ research projects
  4. A visitation to the central laboratory of Faculty of Medicine, UNPAD

Our methods emphasized the research aspect for it was the aspect that the students were most interested to. PUSDI Fair presented many speakers as the representatives for every PUSDI. They talked about the basic information about PUSDI, as well as the quantity of PUSDI and its working field. The event was attended by 238 students who enjoyed the talkshow. Afterwards the event was continued with an essay competition which was done by the 1st year students. Out of all entries, the best 10 essays were chosen, and the participant with the best essays got an opportunity to visit the central lab, with a guidance of one of our lecturers, dr. Ronny. This visitation was held in February 2018.
