HeyHo! by CIMSA UNAND

Greetings medical students!

Without realizing it, school has been a second home for students. On average, they can spend > 10 hours daily for academic and extracurricular purposes. Incidentally, school environment can be a silent threat for the students’ and staffs’ health. Hence, SCORE CIMSA–BEM KM FK UNAND enact HeyHo! (Health School) as a sustainable project to increase awareness, knowledge, and research motivation on air and water cleanliness in the school area. HeyHo! aims to develop a conscience for a clean and healthy environment. This year, HeyHo! focus on utilizing trained SMAN 3 youth researcher to help with the neighboring SMAN 2 students.

The activity is divided into pre-intervention and 6 intervention phases. Pre-intervention phase is where technical meeting and affirmation of SMAN 3 and 2 as external collaborator are reviewed and confirmed. There is also a lecture for SCORE members on the water and air research foundation by dr. Lenosefa, a microbiologist from UNAND. Participants seems very enthusiastic and eager to learn more. 8 October marks HeyHo! first intervention in SMAN 3 Padang. Within this session, assessment on participants’ research motivation are measured using questionnaires. Next, LORE and project officer explain about IFMSA, CIMSA, SCORE, and other essential HeyHo! aspects. By comparison, SCORE UNAND alumnus also disclose about water & air pollution and subsequent diseases. The day ended with a sharing and bonding session between SMAN 3 youth researcher, SMAN 2 trainee researcher, and SCORE members.

Conversely, from the second intervention onwards, focus shifted majorly to laboratory analysis. This intervention involved data collection of water and air from restroom, cafeteria, and classroom in SMAN 3 Padang. Water samples are collected as follows: three samples from students’ restroom, one from teachers’ restroom, and one from mineral water on the cafeteria. Yet, air samples are collected from the classrooms. All samples then brought to the laboratory for testing of microorganism presence by inoculation on growth factor. On the third intervention, SCORE members with youth researcher of SMAN 3 and trainee of SMAN 2, observe and note any development or transformation of the specimens on the laboratory. Those notes will then be used on the 4 th intervention for interpretation and analysis of the microorganism growth and incubation. To facilitate the SMAN 2 trainee, SCORE members and SMAN 3 researcher become their peer educator / facilitator.

Unfortunately, due to time constraints, the fifth and sixth intervention have to be done in succession. On these interventions, participants have a discussion on the laboratory results of water and air samples. The SMAN 3 trainee researchers also required to give a short group presentation on the research. Similar to other activity, HeyHo! is closed by an appreciation session for SMAN 2 & 3 and the best youth researcher based on active participation. Chiefly, HeyHo! act not only as a motivator for students on research but also as a driving force of a movement in manifesting a good and healthy school environment.
