Bioethics is an interdisciplinary science that is important for people to learn to help them in the decision-making process, both professionally and personally. Most of the public and health students do not fully understand the terminology of bioethics. According to Manoharan, et al. (2021), 89.3% of the 224 medical student respondents had poor understanding and knowledge of bioethics. Therefore, SCOPE (Standing Committee on Professional Exchange) and SCORE (Standing Committee on Research Exchange) CIMSA UGM decided to celebrate World Bioethics Day while expanding public understanding, especially medical students regarding bioethics. Therefore, as a form of celebration, a podcast is held that discusses the basics of bioethics and everyday issues faced in the clinical environment.
World Bioethics Day is celebrated every 19 October to raise public awareness about the importance of applying bioethics in everyday situations. Therefore, SCOPE and SCORE (Standing Committee on Research Exchange) CIMSA UGM decided to celebrate World Bioethics Day while expanding public understanding, especially medical students regarding bioethics. With that, BIOCAST: A Talk on Bioethics is held which discusses the basics of bioethics as well as everyday issues faced in the clinical environment.
BIOCAST consists of two series of events: Movie Night and Podcast. Movie Night was held on October 14, 2022 in Zoom Meetings with the presence of dr. Beta from Department of Forensics and Medicolegal FK-KMK UGM. In this Movie Night, we started with an opening from MC and started watching Episode 9 Season 1 of the series “The Good Doctor”. A short yet extensive discussion on bioethical issues present in the movie with dr. Beta and participants is held by the end of the movie. The night ended with closing and documentation. Podcast itself is recorded on the next day in Zoom Meetings with dr. Agnes from Center for Bioethics and Medical Humanities (CBMH) UNESCO Chair on Bioethics UGM as well as dr. Beta from Department of Forensics and Medicolegal FK-KMK UGM.
To close BIOCAST, publication of Podcast in both Spotify CIMSA Happy Hours and in feeds of CIMSA UGM Instagram will be done.
We hope that BIOCAST can give a wider perspective within medical practice and knowledge of participants.
