Before our program begins, we already conduct a call meeting with our incomings around 4 days before they depart from their country where we discuss our local ground rules and several thing related to their arrival, such as who’s going to pick them up, where is the lodging, what should they do when they arrive, etc. Our main program is split into 4 weeks. The first week was used to pick up our incoming student’s from the airport, welcoming party with the deans, upon arrival training and schedule information, tour around campus A (The Faculty of Medicine) and ITD, introduction lectures, and of course field work training. In the second week, we focused on field work and we started by making several mosquito traps. After that, we split into 2 groups consisting of 2 incomings 1 SCORE member and 1 SCOPH member because we have to go back and forth every 7 am and 7 pm, to take the mosquito samples from the trap in two different locations and then we freeze the sample. By the end of the second week, we are able to analyze several mosquitoes samples and divide them into different categories according to their genus and gender. Then, the first two days of the third week were used to take a PCR-RFLP sample from the mosquitos, followed by a day off on 17th of August where the incomings also participated in celebrating Indonesia’s independence day by joining various competitions at UNAIR, such as tug of war and sack races. The last two days of the third week were focused on the Main Social Program where we visited Balai Besar Teknik Kesehatan Lingkungan Dan Pengendalian Penyakit (BBTKLPP) by Minister of Health in Surabaya and Pasuruan followed by a road trip to Bromo and paragliding in Batu, Malang. In Malang, we also greeted and welcomed to stay over at one of SCORE CIMSA UNAIR Alumni’s house, the infamous SCORE Director, Kevin Alvarro. Finally, the fourth week was used to finalize the scientific report and presentation. The exchange ended with a Farewell Party where we had dinner together with the tutor and everyone who ever had been involved with the incomings activities. Also some of our incomings bought our local committee several gifts, one of them includes mini cakes from their country.

Also in our spare time, we also conducted (or more like spontaneous) several Mini Social Programs, such as traveling around the city of Surabaya, trying various Surabaya culinary delights, went to the Ijen crater, Madura, and also Yogyakarta.

Because of many things that I as a LORE, LPO, and person in charge (PIC) go through together everyday with the incomings. We felt a strong bond with them and were very sad when we had to let them go. Especially because they also live in the same boarding house as me and several PICs, we feel lost when the boarding hall that was once crowded becomes deserted. Of course, this activity cannot be separated from obstacles, but the experience we get is very valuable and I hope that the evaluations that we get in this activity can be used to provide even better incoming hosting from our local committee.
