In accordance to Tri Dharma of higher institutions, in which includes research and development, SCORE CIMSA Syiah Kuala University tried to introduce the concept and methods of scientific research to junior high school students through a project called SCIEMENTEENS (Science and Experiment for Teens).
We are aware that teenagers have high curiosity about their surroundings. Thus, we thought that it would be beneficial for them to understand about their surrounding in analytic way of thinking, through a scientific research. By early introduction to research, the students were expected to gain interest to do a research in the future, and create an impact for others, especially the nation. This concept of event goes along with CIMSA’s motto,‘Empowering Medical Students, Improving Nation’s Health’.
SCIEMENTEENS consisted of a series of events. The first event was a presentation about scientific paper that was delivered by Aulia Rahmi, our active member who previously joined a research exchange. This presentation was an opening to our event as well as an introduction to the research itself. The topics discussed were the definition of scientific paper, its types, and its components. After presentation, the students were asked to do a simple experiment of water filtration. This experiment was a simulation of how to do an experiment.
The students who had undergone the presentation and experiment were then asked to make a scientific paper in group that would need to be submitted within 2 weeks. The submission was via email, and the best paper would get a certificate and present prepared by our committee. We hope that through this project, the students would be motivated and gain their confidence in writing their own scientific paper.
